Sophie’s Shared Ownership Journey: Turning a Dream into a Home

At ateb Group, we’re passionate about creating better living solutions — and that includes helping people take their first step onto the property ladder.

Our subsidiary company, Mill Bay Homes, recently supported Sophie and her two children to do just that through their Shared Ownership Wales scheme at The Cornfields, Sageston.

For years, Sophie dreamed of owning her own home but, like many renters, found saving for a full deposit almost impossible while covering rent and family costs. That changed when she discovered shared ownership.

“Saving for a full house deposit whilst renting was almost impossible for me,” Sophie said. “There seemed no way of owning my own home until I came across the shared ownership scheme. The process was actually quite straightforward — I used my smaller deposit to secure a smaller mortgage. Now I’ve got my foot on the property ladder.”

Sophie purchased a 25% share of her beautiful three-bedroom semi-detached home, gaining the security and peace of mind she had long hoped for.

“We absolutely love our new home,” she said. “It’s so well finished, and Mill Bay Homes have been amazing — always on hand if I need anything. I could never have done this without the scheme.”

Shared ownership has also brought financial benefits, with Sophie’s monthly payments now lower than private rent — giving her more freedom to save for the future and plan to buy a greater share of her home in time.

“It’s such a brilliant stepping stone onto the property ladder,” Sophie added. “It’s genuinely changed our lives.”

At ateb, stories like Sophie’s remind us why we do what we do — helping people across West Wales find a better place to call home.
