EV Charging Points

As more customers switch to electric vehicles, we understand the growing interest in installing home charging points. If you’re an ateb customer considering this – either privately or through a mobility grant – here’s what you need to know:

Options Available

At Your Own Expense

You may choose to fund the installation yourself. This must be approved by ateb before any work begins.

You would be responsible for the following:

  • Covering all installation costs, including any necessary upgrades.
  • Ensuring you use a certified installer and comply with safety, local environment and building regulations.
  • Providing a full proposed scope of works and method statement for the specific installation from the installer, including any planning applications required, full designs of the system and electrical infrastructure demands, for review alongside your improvement request before any work is started.
  • Submitting completion and commissioning documents, including any planning approvals, once the work is finished.
  • Maintaining the charging point throughout its lifespan.
  • Covering costs for removal or replacement if needed in future (e.g. end of contract or property works)

Through a Mobility Grant

If eligible, a mobility grant may cover some or all of the installation costs.

You would be responsible for the following:

  • Applying for the grant and managing the process with the grant provider.
  • Ensuring the installer meets ateb’s requirements.
  • Planning permission has been granted and meets all relevant Building Regulations.
  • Providing a detailed scope of work and evidence of installer competencies, including formal certificates for electrical and excavation works.
  • Submitting completion and commissioning documents and any relevant planning approvals.
  • Maintaining the charging point and covering any future removal or replacement costs not covered by the grant.

Before You Buy Your Vehicle

If you’re thinking about buying or leasing an electric vehicle, please wait until you’ve received approval for your home charging point – unless you already have another safe and accessible place to charge your vehicle.

It’s important to note that having an electric vehicle doesn’t automatically mean approval will be granted.

What Will ateb Do?

  • Review your installation request.
  • Advise on suitable locations and any property restrictions.
  • Ensure the installation does not interfere with communal areas or shared access.
  • Coordinate with relevant internal teams (e.g. compliance, asset management) to ensure all risks are considered – particularly where excavation or shared spaces are involved.

End of Contract or Property Changes

If you move out or major works are planned:

  • You may be asked to remove the charging point at your own cost.
  • If the charging point is damaged or causes issues, you may be responsible for repairs or removal.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • EV installations can involve several different teams (like compliance, assets and estates), so everyone must be clear on their role to avoid confusion or mistakes – especially in shared or communal areas.
  • As part of the approval process, we ask that installers provide a complete list of their skills and qualifications, including certificates for both electrical and excavation works.
  • This is because industry bodies have raised concerns about poor-quality or unsafe installations, so we’re tightening our checks to make sure everything is done correctly.
  • If you’re changing an existing EV charger, or installing a new one, you’ll need to let ateb know in writing and get permission before going ahead.
