Flags and symbols say a lot about who we are. They can bring people together, spark pride in where we come from, and brighten up a place. But they can also hit the wrong note if they’re used in a way that makes others feel uncomfortable. At ateb, we want our communities to feel safe, respectful and welcoming for everyone.
What We Ask from Our Customers
If you’re planning to display a flag or symbol in or around your home, here’s what we expect:
- Keep it respectful: Nothing that could cause offence or make others feel excluded.
- No discrimination of any kind: Anything promoting racism, sexism, homophobia, or other harmful views isn’t acceptable.
- Think community: Displays should bring a bit of harmony, not division.
- Be safe: Make sure anything you put up doesn’t block windows, walkways or create hazards.
- Follow tenancy and safety rules: Anything that breaks your agreement, planning rules or fire safety guidance can’t stay up.
What’s Usually Fine
You’re welcome to display things like:
- National flags (Wales, UK, or flags from other countries)
- Local or cultural flags
- Symbols that represent peace or celebration
- Festive or seasonal decorations
What Isn’t Acceptable
We won’t allow anything that:
- Promotes hate, intimidation or extremist views
- Includes offensive or discriminatory imagery
- Damages property or puts others at risk
- Is placed in communal areas or anywhere it may cause tension in the community
Where and How Flags Can Be Displayed
- You can display flags or symbols inside your home or outside on your own property, as long as they meet the expectations above.
- Larger or permanent fixtures – like flagpoles – may count as structural changes and could need permission first. Click here to apply for a minor adaptation.
- Graffiti isn’t allowed and will be removed, but if a community wants to explore a mural through ateb Trust or other funding, we’re always happy to chat.
- If we receive a complaint, we’ll look into it fairly and follow our policies. Every situation is assessed case by case.
- We may ask you to remove any display that doesn’t meet these expectations.
Working Together
Our aim is simple: communities where people feel respected, safe and part of something good. If you’re unsure about putting something up or want a bit of advice, get in touch, we’re here to help.
