Turning words into action with Deeds Not Words 2.0

We’re proud to reaffirm our commitment to the Deeds Not Words 2.0 pledge – a sector-wide promise led by Tai Pawb to take meaningful, measurable action to tackle racial inequality in housing.

The refreshed pledge calls on housing organisations to show leadership, be transparent, confront racism wherever it appears, and make sure the actions we take create real change for the people we serve. It also strengthens expectations for monitoring, reporting, and accountability, recognising that progress only happens when we keep ourselves honest.

For us at ateb, this means going beyond conversation and focusing on action. Our current work includes:

  • Strengthening our equality data for colleagues and customers, giving us a clearer picture of where we can improve.
  • Delivering ongoing togetherness and inclusion training for our teams.
  • Surveying colleagues on their experiences of bullying and harassment so we can respond quickly, address concerns, and reinforce our zero-tolerance approach.

These steps form part of our wider aim to build a fair, inclusive and welcoming workplace. One where everyone feels they have equity of opportunity and a genuine sense of belonging.

As part of this commitment, we recently welcomed Stori to deliver this year’s equality and inclusion training. Their session centred on understanding how systemic inequality impacts communities today and why the actions we take as organisations still matter.

Ceri, our Head of Corporate Services, reflected on the session:

“Stori showed a recent video of individuals sharing their lived experience of racism – it was extremely powerful. It was a stark reminder of why the positive actions we’re taking in ensuring we deliver inclusive services and that our teams and customers have equity of opportunity are so important. We want everyone to feel like they belong at ateb, and training like this reinforces the importance of our values and why they matter.”

There’s still work to do – across the sector and here at home – but Deeds Not Words 2.0 gives us a clear, collective framework to keep moving forward, to challenge complacency, and to keep putting equality at the heart of what we do.

Togetherness is in our DNA – and we’re committed to turning words into action.
