Retrofit at Maes-y-Mor Means Cooler Summers and Warmer Winters

Michelle shares her experience of a recent retrofit project at her home in Solva.

We recently caught up with Michelle, one of our customers at Maes-y-Mor, to hear about the improvements made to her home as part of our latest retrofit work.

Michelle’s property has been fitted with external wall insulation and roof vents – helping her home stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Real Stories Real Impact

What did our customers think?

Michelle, who lives with anxiety, was initially apprehensive about the work being carried out. “I don’t do well with people,” she explained, “but the team were amazing. They were respectful and really understanding of my mental health. They worked around me on bad days and kept me informed every step of the way.”

She told us how much she appreciated the support from the site manager in particular. “George went above and beyond. He’d knock on the door just to check I was okay or if I needed anything. He didn’t have to, but he cared, and that meant the world.”

While the insulation is still very new, Michelle has already noticed a difference. “It’s definitely cooler. I used to have five fans running when it was hot, now I just use two! I’m sure in winter we’ll really see the benefits. It used to get so cold here.”

Michelle was hesitant at first to have the work done, but ultimately glad she gave the go-ahead. “It’s stressful having people around and the scaffolding up, but I thought if it saves a couple of quid and makes the house better, it’s worth it.”

She also appreciated being given a say in how her home looked. “We were given a choice of paint colours for the outside, and I picked a nice grey. It was good to be included in those decisions, it made me feel like part of the process.”

With work now complete, Michelle’s home looks great, feels more comfortable, and is ready to face the colder months ahead.

The work at Maes-y-Mor is part of a £1 million grant-funded programme supported by the Welsh Government, designed to improve the energy efficiency of homes across Wales.

This latest retrofit project is part of our Net Zero pledge to reduce carbon emissions and create more energy-efficient homes for the future. By investing in sustainable improvements like external insulation, we’re helping our customers stay warm and save on energy costs — while supporting a greener future for our communities.
